The Katana Sportsman Champion will be crowned at Western Speedway in Victoria following Saturday's Canada 200 race.
The 2010 Katana championship points battle has been narrowed down to just two competitors: #86 Tom Berrow and #5 Korbin Thomas.
If anyone expects either of these two veterans to crumble under pressure, forget it! These two tough guys have many championships
between them and they each know how to "seal the deal". With an expected full field of competitors there will be many distractions and obstacles to
contend with.

FIVE DOWN....TWO TO GO....TIME TO GET SERIOUS
Reported by Dave Balkwill, Katana Series Announcer
Tension was building in the pits as 18 cars prepared to do battle...the weather was looking good as qualifying began...86 Tom Berrow set fast time at 13.770,
2nd was 5 Korbin Thomas at 13.824 and 3rd was 57 Ken Jorgensen at 13.845.
The 1st heat race was won by 74 Dean Thornton, the 2nd was won by 33 Dave Hemrich. The 100 Lap Main Event lined up with a 13 car invert that placed 55 Charlie
Spratt, and 2 John Ross on the front row. As racing began 93 Tom Garnett was sitting 3rd, and 33 was 4th, with 29 Brent Morris 5th, and 58 Bob Kuhn 6th. 33
took the lead early on, with 93 in 2nd and 29 in 3rd, as 14 Brandon Carlson moved to 4th, and 57 to 5th. With 11 laps down, 86 had moved into 6th as the race
began to take shape with the fast guys making their way to the front. On lap 14, 86 took 4th and began his charge. On lap 25 the order was, 33, 93, 29, 86,
14, 57, 5, 58, 52, and 21 Jason Terasenko the top 10. Lap 27 saw 86 move to 3rd, then to the high groove to take 2nd. 86 took the lead out of turn 4 on lap 30,
moving 33 back to 3rd, then 93, 29, and 14. The 29 car spun in turn 4 and was sent to the back of the pack for the restart. The top 10 on lap 37 were 86, 33,
93, 14, 5, 57, 52, 58, 21, and 74. On lap 38 the 93 car got crossed-up on the front straight, which caused a 5 car pile-up in the turn1 wall. Involved were
the 93, 57, 29, 14, and 21 cars. 21 made it out of the pits in time for the restart, which left us with 10 cars running. The race was shortened to 80 laps due
to the clean-up / delay. On lap 42, Murray Dyck moved into 5th as he was having his best run of the year. On lap 44, 29 re-entered the race after repairs.
Starter, Brian Devers, thru an early green on the restart, but he didn't catch anyone sleeping, and 5 passed 33 on the low side to claim 3rd. With 29 to go,
the order was 86, 5, 53, 33, 72, 21, 55, and 51 Harvey Hoogenboom. With 13 to go, 86 began stretching his lead, and did so until the finish. The crowd stood
and clapped as Tom took a victory lap to celebrate his most dominant victory of the season. Harvey Hoogenboom claimed the $100 dollar prize from Greg
Jablonski Racing for his 8th place finish.
The unofficial finish was Berrow, Thomas, G. Morris, Hemrich, Dyck, Terasenko, Spratt, Hoogenboom, Ross, B. Morris, Thornton, Garnett, Jorgensen, Carlson,
Kuhn, Payette, and Bridge.
Tom "the Bomb" Berrow, driving the #86 Ross Racing Racecar Factory Chassis, sweeps Katana Agassiz Speedway. Second place was claimed by Korbin Thomas driving the
#5 Key Welding Victory Circle Chevy with third place going to Geoff Morris in the #52 Morris Chassis Chevy.

ROUND 5 - AGASSIZ SPEEDWAY SATURDAY, AUGUST 21
Current Katana point leader #86 Tom Berrow will attempt to increase his points lead towards his first series championship. As always, former track
champion #33 Dave Hemrich and 2009 Katana Champion #57 Ken Jorgensen will attempt to take the spotlight, then again, local upstart #18 Ian Graham, may just
get his first Katana win.
Reported by Dave Balkwill, Katana Series Announcer
The temperature was up and the bikinis were in abundance on the beaches as 22 Sportsman cars made their way up the hill to Penticton Speedway. With a two
race weekend ahead of them, did they have their best stuff ready to go? Would Tom Berrow be able to hold on to his points lead? Would Ken Jorgensen, Dave
Key, or Brent Morris, be able to make a run at him?
Tom started the weekend by qualifying with a new track record of 13.90, followed by Brandon Carlson with a 13.98 which also beat the existing record. Ian
Graham was third quick, Mark Berriau was fourth, and Korbin Thomas was fifth wheeling the 5 car. A 15 car invert set the line-up for the 100 lap feature as
lightning lit up the sky in the hills around the track. Dean Thornton led early followed by Mike Haslam. On lap three, contact in turn 1 led to a cut tire
for Dave Hemrich, putting him into the wall in turn 3 with damage to the r/f corner, and out of the action for the rest of the night. It has not been a
fun year for the Hemrich crew as their bad luck continues. Early action saw Matt Stephenson take the lead as Berrow had worked his way up to 5th and
to 7th. Brent Morris got loose causing several cars into evasive moves, as the order shuffled to Stephenson, Berriau, Berrow, Jorgensen, Carlson,
Rory Smith, Haslam, and Thomas. Berrow took the lead in turn 3, as Thomas moved to 5th. With 30 laps down, Thomas spun in 3-4 causing spinning cars,
and a l/r flat for Berriau. Lap 40 saw Berrow into the lead, Stephenson 2nd, Carlson 3rd, and Jorgensen 4th. The race settled down for several laps as
Jorgensen began his move to the front, moving into 3rd on lap 60. Thomas spun again after contact, as Berrow avoided him and protected his lead. By lap
70, several cars had visited the pits with various problems, making the lap checker's earn their money. Lap 85 saw Carlson get by Jorgensen for 3rd,
causing Jorgensen to spin in 3 as he attempted to take the spot back. By lap 90 Carlson was challenging for 2nd, as Jorgensen slipped back to 5th.
Berrow held on for the remaining laps for the win over Carlson, Thomas, Stephenson, and Brent Morris.
RAIN RAIN GO AWAY, PLEASE COME BACK ANOTHER DAY
Heavy rain fell for 15 minutes in late afternoon, as the crews were prepping their cars for the evenings action. The Hemrich crew with Shane Harding
along, had successfully completed suspension repairs on their car and were awaiting track time to check their set-up. 22 cars total hot lapped on the
green track, every crew chief trying to outguess the weather and come up with the hot set-up for his car. The field was lined up for the main based on
the finish from Saturday nights race with the invert being 15 cars.
Joe Cornett-Ching took the lead early over Ian Graham and Mark Berriau. Early lap action saw contact between Gord Quaite, Doug Richens, and Bob Kuhn.
Lap 15 saw a restart order of Berriau, Brent Morris, Thomas, Graham, Cornett-Ching, and Berrow as he began moving thru traffic. Berrow moved to 4th, and Brent
Morris moved into the lead out of 2 before Thomas spun again causing Tom and Ian to take evasive action. Graham hit the wall in turn 4, on lap 35. On
the restart, Dave Hemrich began to make his move and Jorgensen moved to 8th. Geoff Morris was seriously on the move and had worked his way up to 3rd.
By lap 48, Geoff Morris was second, Brent Morris was 3rd, Hemrich was 4th, and Berrow was 5th. On lap 50, Geoff Morris took the lead over Berriau, as Hemrich
moved to 3rd, and Berrow to 4th. By lap 55, Hemrich was 2nd, Berrow was 3rd, Berriau was shuffled back to 4th, and Brent Morris was 5th, with Jorgensen
6th. Nothing changed until lap 75, when Kenny Rutz had a problem and collided with the race leader, causing Geoff Morris to hit the front stretch wall hard,
and knocking him out of the race. Hemrich and Berrow showed great driving ability as they avoided the damaged vehicles hidden by smoke from the accident.
The restart had Hemrich, Berrow, Brent Morris, Berriau, and Carlson the top five. Hemrich was able to hold off repeated attempts by Berrow, as Morris
challenged from the 3rd position. With help from set-up guru Shane Harding, and hard work from the crew, everything finally came together for Dave Hemrich.
Tom Berrow was able to consolidate his hold on top spot in points and Brent Morris had one of his best races of the year in the beautiful #29 Chevy.
Official finish and points can be found on the web site.

11TH ANNUAL GORDIE MANNES WEEKEND - PENTICTON
Current points leader #86 Tom Berrow driving the Ross Racing Racecar Factory Chevy will be looking to solidify his bid for the
championship at the two-day Gordie Mannes Memorial Weekend. 2009 champion #57 Ken Jorgensen driving the Abney Roofing/Bayfield Mortgage Impala,
along with Vancouver Island drivers Brent and Geoff Morris, will attempt to thwart Tom's hopes for the 2010 championship. Rumour has it that
former Katana champion Korbin Thomas will drive the #5 Key Welding/Victory Circle Chassis and may throw the proverbial "monkey wrench" into
others best layed plans.
Penticton race fans will see the first Okanagan appearance of #8 Kenny Rutz. This young gun comes from strong racing stock and with his no nonsense
"on the gas all the time" attitude, should put on quite a show. The series is expecting the return of some local sportsman drivers who will happily
take on the out-of-towners.

KATANA - RULES CHANGE!
Submitted by Brian Poppe, Katana Tech Director
This is a reminder that everyone will have to race on the same tires for both days in Penticton, no new spares and American Racer tires only.
I would also like to take this time to inform all teams that we will not be allowing teams to run a coil bind or bump stop set-up in the front of their
race car. After looking into this type of set-up we feel that it is an unfair competition advantage that is not available for everyone. So, in the spirit of fair
competition, we hope everyone will comply with this change. I do not like making changes in the middle of a race season, but feel it is something that should
be dealt with before teams spend a bunch of money on these types of set-ups only to find out next season they are not allowed. If anyone has any questions
about this, you can e-mail me or call me at 250-488-5847. Thank you.

KATANA SPORTSMAN ACTION AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY
By: Dave Balkwill, Katana Sportsman Series Announcer
On the weekend of the Williams Lake Stampede lots of horsepower was on display at the 3/8ths oval. The Katana Sportsman cars with their companion show,
the South Okanagan Bakery Street Stocks, provided plenty of thrills for the local fans who were in their favorite spots on the terraced hillside above the
track. The weather was better than last year, starting off sunny, then some cloud and light winds as the day went on. Hot laps and qualifying proved that the
drivers were ready for the night of action. 16 sportsman cars provided a tightly packed field as did the 17 street stocks.
Paul Tourond was the class of the field in the street stocks and was challenged several times by Brian Clutchey who was followed closely by Derek Brears.
Their 50 lap main was run in 21 minutes, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats the whole time. Defending champion, Donnie Krickemeyer, was taken out
of contention early in the race, when a cut tire put him in the wall on lap 16. Trevor Nystrom set fast time and finished 4th in the main, followed by Dan
Mellon.
The 16 Sportsman cars timed in with the field only 1.5 seconds apart. Fast time was set by Korbin Thomas in the 5 car, with a time of 15.659. Second quick
was Tom Berrow at 15.688, while Ken Jorgensen was third quick at 15.923. The first heat race was won by Tom Garnett and the second was won by Brent Morris.
The 12 car invert started Dean Thornton on the pole with Mike Haslam on his outside. Berrow and Thomas started in the 6th row, with several fast cars in
front of them, making for interesting action in the early laps. Murray Dyck challenged for the lead first, taking it on lap 4 as Geoff Morris moved into
second. Morris moved to the outside and took the lead on lap 7 as his brother Brent took over third. Berrow had moved up to 4th, and Thornton eased into
5th. Brent brushed the wall on lap 9, allowing Jorgensen to move into 4th. Lap 19 saw Berrow move into the lead, with Thornton close behind and lots of
battling from there back in the closely grouped pack. On lap 34 Jorgensen moved to 2nd with Thornton getting him back on lap 38. On lap 39 Jorgensen spun
into turn one causing Garnett and Kuhn to make contact in turn 1-2 sending them both to the pits for repairs. The restart was exciting as Berrow had a tire
go down during the red flag and did not get up to speed, causing some interesting moves in the pack as they all avoided him. Thornton inherited the lead on
lap 42, followed by Brent Morris and Ken Jorgensen. Kenny Rutz had made his way back to 4th, with Tom Garnett behind him in 5th, and Mike Haslam in 6th.
Garnett bounced off the inside curb, splitting his oil pan and oiling down the track on lap 68. Berrow was putting on a show for the fans as his car was
fast, even though he was down 5 laps to the leaders. On lap 80 only the 5 and 29 cars were on the lead lap, but the racing was still intersting between
the lapped cars. A light rain began to fall on lap 94 as the field finished the last 6 laps without any further incidents. Total time of the race was 55
minutes.
The official finish was:
Korbin Thomas
Brent Morris
Ken Jorgensen
Mike Haslam
Tom Berrow
Harvey Hoogenboom
Dean Thornton
John Ross
Geoff Morris
Kenny Rutz
Brandon Carlson
Tom Garnett
Bob Kuhn
Francis Payette

KATANA ROCKS WESTERN SPEEDWAY
By: Dave Balkwill, Katana Sportsman Series Announcer
Very chilly weather greeted us at Western Speedway on Saturday afternoon the 29th of May. Twenty-eight cars were there to do battle for 100 laps on the 4/10ths oval.
Fast time was 17.155 by Wade Bland in the 07 car, second fast was Dave Hemrich in the 33 car at 17.184 and third quickest was Bob Kuhn at 17.195 in the 58
car.
The top 80% of the field was inverted, putting the two fast cars in the 11th row for the start. Traffic sorted itself out for the first 10 laps, and on
lap 11, the 81 car of Darrell Midgley had moved to 2nd. On lap 17 Midgley moved to the lead and Dave Key in the 5 car made his way to 2nd. Meanwhile
Brent Morris in the 29 car had moved to 3rd. On lap 23, Tom Berrow spun after contact with Hemrich, which put him to the back of the field. The fans were
treated to a good show as he began to make his way thru traffic, making his way to 5th on lap 49. Several yellow flag periods slowed the action until lap
67 when the order was Midgely, Morris, Berrow, Robbie Haslam, Brandon Carlson, and Hemrich. Dave Key, Bob Kuhn, Murray Dyck and Harvey Hoogenboom rounded
out the top ten. Several good battles ensued within these 10 cars, but the order didn't change.
Midgely turned the fastest lap of the race at 17.124. Total
time of the race was 1:30:13.864. Seven cars finished on the lead lap. The next race on the schedule is July 3rd at Williams Lake, B.C., our furthest point north
on the series.

MAINLANDERS VS. ISLANDERS - LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
Without a doubt, one of the best racing rivalries to date is between the mainland and island drivers. This intense rivalry has been
going on since racing began. The next installment of this "racing feud" will be May 29th at Western Speedway in Victoria as the Katana Sportsman Tour
makes its 2010 debut on the island.
Currently, the game stands at a one-all tie since the Katana Sportsman cars visited Western Speedway just two years ago.
Islander Jason Beaulieu, was the winner of the first round at the 2008 Canada 200; mainland driver Ken Jorgensen, returned the favour in 2009.
Next up.....the 2010 tie breaker.
The mainland drivers will have to contend with the resurrgence of island drivers such as, newcomer Ray Anderosov, driving his flashy Dale Earnhardt
tribute car, and don't count out the always dominating Morris brothers. Mainlander #86 Tom Berrow will be debuting a brand new shiny Race Car Factory
chassis at this event. Tom should prove to be a real force with many championships under his belt.
By all pre-season accounts, the car count will be the envy of many other race tracks.
A super added bonus to the event, is the adjoining Victoria Hall of Fame ceremony.
The Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame, the first formed in Canada to be solely dedicated to highlight the sport of Auto Racing, is celebrating our 26th
Anniversary in 2010.
This year's special ceremony will be held on Friday evening, May 28th. It will occur at the Eagle Ridge Community Centre at 1089 Langford Parkway,
Victoria. It is a very huge facility which will allow us to display many cars as well as have a superb seating
arrangement for those in attendance.
Special thanks to Langford Mayor Stu Young and Facility Operator Gerry St. Cyr for providing this facility for
the Hall of Fame. Doors will open at 6:00 PM with the formal ceremonies commencing at 7:30 PM sharp. Admission will still be only $15.00, which includes
popular beverages available throughout the evening and light food refreshments will be served following the ceremonies. A free souvenir programme will also
be handed out at this time.
A very special "PLUS" will also be given to all those who attend this Friday function. The following night at Western Speedway features the Katana Boat
Series, Late Models and Stock Cars. The Stock Cars will be competing for the Jim & Lorraine Haslam Memorial Hall of Fame Trophy. The Friday night
attendees will all receive a free pass to attend this great Saturday event courtesy of the Western Speedway Promoters. In addition to this free $18
ticket, the adjacent Hall of Fame Museum will be open free of charge so that everyone can come in and enjoy the historical displays and memorabilia on
site. Any donations will be appreciated to support this great facility.
Although the names of this year's Inductees are not released in advance, they will be honoured and join the 71 previously inducted persons in the Hall.
In addition, there will be Pioneer Award recipients introduced who will be added to the 59 previous selections in the Hall.
The Motor Racing heritage on Vancouver Island dates back prior to the 1920's. It is rich in historical significance and the Hall of Fame Committee is
extremely proud to be able to highlight the noteworthy personalities of the past on Vancouver Island and showcase the various significant accomplishments
that have occurred.
Everyone is invited to attend this year's event. As always, it allows members of the Auto Racing Fraternity, their fans, friends and anyone interested in
learning about the sport to come together and remember past happenings, renew old acquaintances, meet new ones, look at the memorabilia on display and
generally enjoy the evening.
For any additional information, please contact Ross Rockett at 250-652-1303 or any of the Hall of Fame Committee members listed on the
website .
